The Audrey Hepburn CARES Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles was initially established in 1994 in response to the growing commitment to provide comprehensive, high quality child abuse evaluations in a caring, "child friendly" environment. Since its inception, the CARES Team has expanded from a team primarily focused just on the identification of child abuse into a multifaceted multidisciplinary child maltreatment Center encompassing identification, treatment, medical follow-up care, prevention, education, advocacy, and research in the field of child abuse and neglect.
CARES Center team members provide expertise to reliably identify the hundreds of children who are victims of maltreatment among the many thousands of children who present for services at CHLA each year. We provide holistic and comprehensive forensic evaluations; which include extensive psychosocial assessments and medical follow-up care with a developmental-behavioral focus. CARES Center social workers have extensive training in forensic interviewing, child abuse assessments/evaluations/consultations, and Child Protective Services and Law Enforcement referrals. We also provide the consultation necessary to help ensure that these children receive the full protection of the justice system and offer the mental health services necessary for the recovery of these children and families.
Our patient population encompasses all areas of child maltreatment: from sexual and physical abuse to neglect and HIV infected victims. The CARES Team is the only child abuse team in Southern California, and perhaps the nation, with board-certification in both child abuse and in developmental-behavioral pediatrics (as well as in general pediatrics), providing a critical additional focus, and enabling a more comprehensive assessment in all child abuse cases. This specialized training allows the CARES Center to provide comprehensive care to our community's large population of children with developmental disabilities, a group that is at a higher statistical risk for child abuse. The Center also provides a special focus on educating caregivers and health care providers regarding the effects of toxic stress/trauma (e.g., child maltreatment) on the developing brain and how that impacts behavior, development, and the social and emotional well-being of a child. While the effects of childhood trauma can be profound, they can be minimized, and the children can recover.
Team members are also available to provide consultative services regarding pediatric gynecological concerns. In addition, the Audrey Hepburn CARES Center team members actively participate in regional and national projects such as education, training and/or research projects that support both CHLA and the community.
As the demands on the Center increase to provide a state of the art, hospital wide child abuse program, the Audrey Hepburn CARES Center continues to seek support to fulfill its mission.
